Losing soldiers to roadside landmines and IEDs when you are helping a country mend fences and prevent a civil war from escalating is indeed nothing short of tragic. We all support those young men and women in uniform as they complete their mission. The Iraqi war is not something we wish to talk about and it is unfortunate indeed many do not approve on the human asset side especially considering the political fallout if we cut and run or fail to complete our mission, there will be hell to pay in that regions of decades to come.
Additionally let us please put the number of deaths in the Iraqi War into perspective shall we? I mean we lose 100,000 people a year to hospital infections, 40,000 a year to auto mobiles and there are diseases, disasters and other health related deaths too. Yet only 2000 in Iraq, yet we liberated an entire nation, brought them their freedom and need that central Middle Eastern Real Estate to mend the worlds problems with the radical Islamic international terrorists. On the cost side it takes a lot to train, house, feed and provide retirement and benefits to humans and training human killers is problematic once they come back stateside. I am pro-robotic in every regard; I would rather send in robots to win that war.
There are always cool advanced research projects going on in the defense of our nation, I am impressed with the thought of steer able munitions, net centric components, materials, robotics and as such technologies make their way to the battle space there will be fewer deaths. Americans should be pro-military and also expect to continue to enjoy the spin off technologies for the future, which are a ten-fold return to economic vitality of our nation. I am happy to see one of the new Joint Chiefs of staff nominations did a stint for 2-years at DARPA. This is smart thinking and a good appointment. Our Country must stay bleeding edge. America has too now; we have no other choice in the future, if in fact we wish to get to that future at all. The Navy has some cool new concepts and that movie "Stealth" at least touches on some of the future thoughts. The faster we get this stuff operational, the better we hold our lead and deter sponsorship from nation states to rogue elements who wish us ill.
Everyone in the United States ought to stop looking at the death tolls so closely with such a vengeful eye, aggrevated by the mass media hysteria of another Vietnam and come to grips with the importance of this mission and what it means to not only this nation but the future of all nations the World over.
