Guns in the 1970s where illegal in Japan but the population of the country was interested in them. The economy of the country being a free market one there are business people who so this as an opportunity and thus manufacturing of guns started. The manufacturers made guns that looked like real fire arms but where powered by spring. The early guns could fire several rubber and plastic BBs and the 8 and the 6millimeteer were created. Just like any other invention with time there were improvements and modifications and the airsoft gun is no exception. The guns were improved from spring powered to gas powered using a several systems. The spring powered gun was transformed into the classic airsoft when the idea of the gun was brought to North America In the1990s. When the Japanese's economy hit recession it coincided with the launch of the electric powered gun and the effect of the recession on the manufacturers of this type of airsoft gun was severe only leaving the founder manufacturer of the gun still in business.

The Tokyo Marui (the founder of the electric gun) soon can up with new innovations but in the early 2000s Chinese's manufacturers entered the market with their cheaper models. Caring for the gun can be quite labor intensive as you have to clean it after every use. There are instructions that one should follow when they are using the gun so as to keep it in good working order and to be safe when using the gun.

Just like the ordinary guns that can kill people the airsoft gun has been a major bone of contention. Especially when it comes to the issue of children operating the guns. Controversial or not they seem to be here to stay.
