How many ways can you think of to cover a floor?
Carpet, hardwood, stone tile, vinyl tile, stone tile, ceramic tile, area rugs. That's a lot of choices. Many factors will help you decide. First, what room are you flooring? Does the floor there get a lot of traffic or dirt? Does it need to be easy to clean? Will children be using that room a lot? Or do you rarely use that room? Is it a formal room or a casual one? What is your interior decorating scheme? What colors are you using? Does it matter whether the floor is warm or cold? Hard or soft? And of course, how much can you spend?
Start with a basic decision like whether to use carpet, hardwood or tile of some sort. Carpet rooms where you want the floor to be soft and warm. Some people don't mind a cold tile floor in their bedroom maybe, but me, I want warm, soft carpet, or at least an area rug when my feet hit the floor on a winter morning. Tile is great in bathrooms and kitchens because the floor is going to get wet. Add a few bathroom rugs that you can wash and you're all set.
Hardwood is expensive. If you can afford it, you can use it in the whole house, and add area rugs as accents and to give your feet someplace soft to land in bedrooms and bathrooms. Rock tiles are gorgeous, too, with some of the same price and comfort considerations. They, too, are likely to need a few rugs added to areas where you will want warmth or a softer surface.
The flooring sets the tone for the entire room. It seems obvious, but if you've got hardwoods and expensive Persian rugs you set an entirely different tone than vinyl tile in the kitchen. With some careful shopping and price comparisons, you can find what you want and begin building your interior-decorating scheme from the flooring up.
